Louisville will play host to a three-day festival celebrating the Beatles May 27-29.

The event, which has been held in Cleveland for the past three years, is expected to draw 40 bands and as many as 20,000 followers of the Fab Four from around the world.

Tourism spending from the event, called Abbey Road on the River, will likely pump about $3 million into Louisville's economy, Metro Mayor Jerry Abramson said today. The event is expected to produce significant national media exposure as well, he said.

A Beatles film festival, lectures about the rock group and the sale of every conceivable item of Beatle memorabilia, including paintings of the musicians by well-known artists, will be part of the weekend.

Activities will be at the Kentucky Center, on the Riverfront Plaza/Belvedere and at the Galt House. The featured group to appear will be Smithereens.

Fifth Third Bank has agreed to be the title sponsor for one year but will consider sponsorship for subsequent years, said Phil McHugh, the bank's executive vice president. He declined to say how much the bank is providing for the event.

Gary Jacob, the show's organizer, said he wants to make Louisville the event's permanent home.

"Louisville is now the home to the largest Beatles festival in America," Abramson said at a Kentucky Center news conference today.
